USCB’s Institute for the Study of the Reconstruction Era hosting 3rd annual spring symposium
From staff reports
The Institute for the Study of the Reconstruction Era will host its third annual public history symposium Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, 2025. The two-day event, which is free and open to the public, will be hosted at USCB’s Center for the Arts.
This year’s event titled “Her Mark,” will include presentations, exhibits and interactive discussions highlighting the presence and impact women had during the Reconstruction period in South Carolina and the Lowcountry.
The event will open with a reception on Friday evening featuring a performance by the Robert Smalls Leadership Academy Choir ensemble followed by a keynote presentation by Hermina Glass-Hill, Executive Director of the Susie King-Taylor Institute. Hill will share highlights of Taylor’s personal journey of perseverance and her legacy of service in Beaufort with the First South Carolina Volunteer Troops — a regiment of soldiers of African descent who served in the Civil War.
On Saturday, there will be a full day of presentations, panel discussions and exhibits focusing on the role women played in support of Civil War efforts, the establishment of educational opportunities and post-war era community building. Presenters include professional historians, students, members of descendent communities, and educators.
