GGIF will provide turkey meals to 100 families

From staff reports

The Gullah Geechee Initiative Foundation (GGIF) will be hosting “A Day of Thanks & Giving” on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce at 711 Bladen Street.

GGIF’s goal for the event is to provide a turkey – along with food items that are typically used when preparing a Thanksgiving meal – to 100 individuals/households.

Food distribution starts at 11 a.m. and will continue until supplies last. There will also be free on-site COVID testing and flu shots.

GGIF is a nonprofit organization that provides programs to promote cultural enrichment, character development, academic excellence, athletics, and community outreach programs to residents living in the Lowcountry.

In a release, GGIF founder Kamal Mandela Wigfall said the organization was sponsoring the event to support additional communities “after such great support and participation for our Food Distribution to individuals and families on St. Helena Island needing assistance during this pandemic crisis.”

Prior to the event, the GGIF is accepting monetary and or in-kind donations of collard greens, sweet potatoes, cornbread mix, elbow noodles, stuffing and cranberry sauce.
