Family displaced in house fire; dog rescued

From staff reports

Emergency responders answered a report of a home on fire in the Sunset neighborhood off Broad River Boulevard just after 7:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 22. First arriving units were met by the homeowners who reported that all humans were out of the home but they could not find their family dog.

Firefighters made their way in and found signs of fire in the back half of the home and in the attic above. Responding quickly, they were able to simultaneously extinguish the fire saving the majority of the home, and find the family pet safely reuniting the pup with his humans outside.

All told, units from Burton Fire, Beaufort County EMS, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Beaufort Police Department, and the Palmetto Chapter of the American Red Cross worked for about two hours to extinguish and investigate the fire, as well as coordinate services for the family who was unfortunately displaced by the event.

While the specific cause of the fire is still under investigation, firefighters would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that “Tis the season …” for home fires as well as great holiday spirit. This time of year traditionally sees an increase in home fires related to cooking, so we all should take a moment to consider safety in our cooking efforts as well as everything else we do this season.
