Polaris Tech Charter seeks help for in-school tutoring

Retired teachers and college students majoring in education, math or reading are needed to tutor small groups of Polaris Tech students as part of a research-based effort to close achievement gaps.

For the upcoming school year starting in August, Polaris Tech has committed more than $100,000 to tutoring at the 530-student K-12 school in Ridgeland.

“We know from research, from data and from our own experience that our learners make the strongest academic gains when they receive individual attention and instruction,” Polaris Tech Executive Director Kim Statler said. “This money will expand our ability to help learners in reading and math.”

The tutoring is part of a research-based initiative designed to close achievement gaps for students who are two or more grade levels behind in reading and/or math. Tutors will provide consistent, small-group instruction during the school day to help students accelerate academic growth and reach grade-level proficiency.

Statler hopes to bring aboard 16-20 instructors to provide tutoring services starting in August with training and then tutoring in September. The program will run two to three days per week in 45-minute sessions, with two to four students in each tutoring group. Pay ranges from $25 per hour to $40 per hour depending on qualifications.

“Ideally, we will include both experienced classroom teachers and college education majors to our tutoring program,” Statler said. “The retired teachers have that one-to-one teaching experience that connects young people to learning, and college students preparing to become teachers will gain invaluable experiences tutoring at Polaris Tech.”

Candidates must be willing to undergo a background check and training prior to service. Prior tutoring or instructional experience is preferred but not required. For details, contact the school at 843-645-0605 or email info@polaristech.org.
