The comeback was spectacular, but the outcome was devastating for the Beaufort Eagles on Friday at Fort Dorchester.
Samari Bonds and Amare Patterson hooked up for two late touchdowns to pull Beaufort even at 21 in the fourth quarter, but the host Patriots scored the winning touchdown with 20.9 seconds left to escape with a 28-21 win in a matchup of Lowcountry heavyweights.
After spotting the Patriots a 14-0 lead, Elias Johnson got Beaufort on the board to cut the margin in half, and it stood at 14-7 at halftime. Jordan Wright’s second interception of the night set up a Ryan Campbell touchdown run to make it a two-touchdown game, but Bonds and Patterson got cooking in the fourth quarter, connecting for a pair of scores, including a 44-yard strike to tie it at 21.
A pass interference call on fourth down kept Fort Dorchester’s next possession alive and moved them inside the 20, and the Patriots had a touchdown wiped off the board by a penalty before Campbell found the end zone from 6 yards out to lift Fort D to the win.
Will Codding racked up 10 tackles, and Tylik Isom and James Thomas each had eight to lead a solid defensive effort for the Eagles.
Beaufort (0-1) hosts Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday for its home opener.
