Where can you find a delicious, quick lunch for under $4 with great atmosphere? There is little gem located right here on Lady’s Island called The Dog House. If you aren’t paying attention, you might drive right past it, but it is worth slowing down a little and giving the food a try.
The Dog House has a variety of fresh and unique hot dogs, all delicious and hard to choose from. You can get your meal to go, or you can enjoy the outdoor dining at one of their many picnic tables. Since Beaufort almost always has moderate weather, even this time of year, The Lunch Bunch opted for a pleasant outdoor lunch.
Irene decided to give the “Big Dog” a try. This is made with quarter pound of Boar’s Head meat and is grilled, giving it a unique smoky flavor. She topped it with sauerkraut and spicy mustard, giving it a little “German” flare. Irene gave her choice two thumbs up.
Buck ordered the “Fuhgeddaboudit.” Tony Soprano would approve of this Italian sausage dog topped with peppers and onions and served on a hoagy roll. At $5.53, this is the most expensive item on the
menu. It’s a large portion, but Buck didn’t have any trouble finishing it off!
I opted for the special of the day, which was a bacon and slaw dog with spicy mustard. I couldn’t think of anything tastier than adding a slice of thick, juicy bacon to a hot dog, and boy was I right. If you’ve never given that combo a try, now is the time. I highly recommend it.
The Dog House is located at 381 Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island, not far from Lady’s Island Elementary School. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sunday. Call 843-770-0013.
