County receives recycling grant

Beaufort County will soon be receiving $64,945 from three grants awarded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

The grants will fund solid waste and recycling projects at several convenience centers, an Electronics Recycling Collection event and educational materials for waste tire recycling. All three grants were obtained through proposals submitted by the Solid Waste and Recycling section of the Beaufort County Public Works Department. The first grant of $33,139 will provide a 2nd gas/oil mixture tank at the Simmonsville Road site in Bluffton, along with a concrete slab covered by a new carport type awning. The Pritchardville site will also receive a concrete slab and carport to replace its current one with this money.

The second grant of $28,056 will fund the Electronics collection event scheduled to be held September 21 at the Shanklin Road Public Works site and the Benton Field Road Public Works site. Any funds remaining will be applied toward a second event. The third grant of $3,750 provides $3,000 for educational outreach and $750 for professional development.

“We appreciate the funds from the state and the additional services they will provide to our citizens at no cost to Beaufort County taxpayers. I commend my staff for their exceptional effort in developing the proposals and commitment to improving service while saving money”, said Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling Director Jim Minor.
