Construction had its strongest year yet, according to a release from the city.

Permits were issued for a total of 142 single-family and multifamily homes or apartments, while eight commercial buildings were approved.

These numbers represent a 100 percent increase in residential units compared to the previous year. The total value of commercial development was $44 million, and residential construction was almost $22 million.

The City approved 50 single-family home permits, and 92 multifamily units, or a total of nine apartment buildings.

The commercial buildings included Longhorn Steakhouse, which is scheduled to open in Beaufort on Roberts Smalls Parkway on Jan. 28. The 111-room Springhill Suite Hotel, under construction on Boundary Street, is expected to open later this year. The residential multifamily construction includes Pine Court Apartments and Ribaut Senior Living, both on Ribaut Road.

A total of 1,155 construction permits were approved in 2019. Total revenue from permits was $462,884, including $281,000 in new construction permits.
