Book bans attack free speech

The School District’s (potential) book ban leads us like Alice down a rabbit hole. And when even award-winning literature is targeted, it’s the equivalent of a five-alarm fire.

Obviously, there may be books not fit for the growth and development of children in kindergarten through 5th grade. However, that’s no reason for these books to be discarded and not seen in our middle and high schools libraries.

Moms for Liberty, and similar groups, should not take the place of parents deciding for themselves what their children are exposed to. Nor should the excuse that such exposure take place in the home only, because then we remove the ideas of shared thought and discussion.

Book bans and other tactics by Moms for Liberty is part of a broader attack on free speech in the classroom that amounts to educational censorship. We must combat these efforts in order to protect the First Amendment rights of students and teachers, and preserve free speech in America.
