4 School Board seats up for grabs

From staff reports

There is just one contested Beaufort County Board of Education seats that affect northern Beaufort County voters – District 2, while District 5 is somewhat a mystery.

David Striebinger held the District 2 seat but was not running for re-election when he died last month. The seat represents Beaufort, Lady’s Island, Fripp Island, and parts of St. Helena Island.

Terry Thomas, a retired Beaufort County educator and coach, is running for the seat against Chloe Gordon, a school administrator at Lady’s Island Middle School.

U.S. Navy veteran Gwyneth J. Saunders is running as a write-in candidate for District 5, the only district that will have no candidate on the ballot.

The current District 5 representative – Richard Geier – was moved into District 4 when the county redrew the boundaries for both the county and school districts following the results of the 2020 census.

“The people deserve a representative. Someone qualified in their corner to ask the right questions and hold people accountable. I have a proven record of service, reliability and commitment,” Saunders said.

Running unopposed are incumbents William Smith (District 3) and Geier (District 4).
