Public Facilities Committee unanimous in plan to expand Sea Island Parkway

From staff reports

Beaufort County Council Public Facilities Committee voted unanimously this week to draw up plans to expand Sea Island Parkway to four lanes with a landscaped median and pathways.

“This option will alleviate congestion, make a scenic entryway to Lady’s Island and a walkable neighborhood,” Assistant County Administrator for Infrastructure Jared Fralix said. “We will develop a well-thought-out plan to move our Lady’s Island Projects forward.”

This alternative will impact homes and businesses along Sea Island Parkway but will avoid significant environmental and neighborhood impacts around Beaufort County High School.

The County staff will work over the next month to develop cost, business, and residential impacts along with an initial draft proposal for the public to provide comments.

This change will address the realignment of the Beaufort High School access that was identified as a project from the 2017 Lady’s Island Corridor Study and the 2021 US 21, US 21 Business, and SC 802 mainline corridor improvements study. The project will be funded through the 2018 One Cent Sales Tax Referendum.

The project is the second of nine road improvement projects identified in the 2018 Penny Sales Tax referendum. The project directly affects the other seven road projects and a few pathway projects.
