The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the University of South Carolina Beaufort are inviting K-12 teachers of all subjects to apply for “America’s Reconstruction: The Untold Story.”
This is the fifth meeting of one of the most popular NEH summer institutes for educators and will be held July 5-25 on USCB’s Historic Beaufort Campus. Deadline to apply is March 1.
This year’s institute will offer an in-depth look at the historical dimensions and significance of the Reconstruction in the Lowcountry and United States. Twenty-five educators from around the country will receive a $2,850 stipend designed to cover travel and other expenses, if selected for this workshop about one of the most neglected and misunderstood periods in our nation’s history.
The summer institute will include field trips to historic sites, lectures by leading scholars, and development of lesson plans that examine closely three broad themes over the course of the institute: Prelude to Reconstruction; Reconstruction and its Aftermath; and Historical Memory and the “Second Reconstruction,” the modern Civil Rights Movement.
Notification emails will be sent out to selected applicants on March 25. This seminar is planned as a residential, in-person experience, but USCB follows guidelines related to COVID-19 and reserves the right to alter the modality.
