Beaufort High’s girls and May River’s boys took home the team titles Saturday at the Marwin Kline Invitational track meet held at Whale Branch Early College High School.

Senior standout Layla Warren led the way for Beaufort’s girls, who totaled 142 points to easily outpace May River (98.5) and Hilton Head High (91) to top the 12-team field. Battery Creek (79) was fourth, followed by Bluffton (56.5) in fifth.

Warren won both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles and finished second in the javelin, and the Eagles claimed the 4•100 and 4•400 relays. Anna Brown also claimed gold in the 800, and Jayla Daise was second in the shot put and discus and third in the javelin.

Battery Creek’s Myra Smith had a monster day, winning both the 100 and 200 — and edging Bluffton star Tacoya Heyward in the 100 with a time of 12.63 seconds — and placing second in the triple jump. Teammate Keona Sanders won the high jump and was runner-up in the 400 hurdles, and Erica Tobin claimed gold in the javelin, silver in the high jump, and bronze in the 100.

May River’s boys dominated on the track, sweeping the relays and getting wins from Jaxon Beebe (1600) and Fareed Abdullah (200) to rack up 129 points and edge Beaufort High by 20. Battery Creek (87) was third, followed by Hilton Head High (73) in a 14-team field.

Beaufort’s Nash Mills claimed a pair of victories in the 400 and 3200, and Charlie Bennett edged Beebe by less than a second to win the 800 and placed third in the 1600.

Battery Creek’s Michael Martello was a multi-event winner, claiming the shot put and discus. Simmons was the 100 and placed second in the 200, and Whale Branch’s Richard Parker won the 110 hurdles and was third in the long jump.

John Paul II did not have any champions, but the Golden Warriors had two athletes hit qualifying standards for the SCISA State Championships — Bella Termini in the discus (71-3) and Jeremiah Young in the 200 (25.34).
