More than two weeks off didn’t do anything to stop the momentum of the Whale Branch girls, who rolled to a 66-20 win at St. John’s on Tuesday in their first game since Jan. 16.

The undefeated Warriors raced out to a 22-7 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 34-9 at halftime, cruising to a convincing win.

Zhani Thompson led four Warriors in double figures with 16 points, while Kynew Barnwell added 14, Jazmin Diaz had 13, and Erin Rivers contributed 11. Layla Love added eight points for Whale Branch.

Whale Branch (8-0, 3-0) hosts Baptist Hill on Friday.

Warriors earn another tough region win

After 16 days off, it was the same Whale Branch boys who showed up Tuesday night to grind out a tough 40-30 win at St. John’s.

The Warriors have found themselves in plenty of defensive struggles this season, and it was more of the same against the Islanders. Whale Branch led 5-1 after an ugly first quarter before opening up a 17-5 halftime advantage.

Whale Branch extended the lead to 30-15 after three quarters and kept the Islanders at bay in the fourth.

Devonta Barnard scored 18 points, Jaquan Gillison added 10, and Jashaun Gillison had eight for the Warriors.

Whale Branch (6-2, 4-0) hosts Baptist Hill on Friday in a matchup of two of the three undefeated teams in Region 7-1A.
