Volunteers needed to transport injured birds

From staff reports

The Avian Conservation Center (ACC) is looking for volunteers to join its Injured Bird Transport Network.

The ACC will offer a Transport Training Workshop virtually in hopes to expand its transport network. It will be hosting an Injured Bird Transport Volunteer Training Workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20 via Zoom.

The Avian Medical Clinic, one facet of the Avian Conservation Center, operates 365 days a year, receiving calls about injured birds in need of help between 9 a.m and 9 p.m., on average, receiving 800-900 patients a year, including birds of prey and shorebird species presenting with a variety of injuries.

During 29 years of service, the ACC has admitted more than 10,000 wild birds of prey and shorebirds.

Working with wildlife, especially when they are compromised by an injury or illness, is an advanced skill, so the group relies on a network of trained volunteers located throughout South Carolina to assist with these calls.

During the training workshop, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn techniques for safely capturing and transporting injured wild birds from the field to the Avian Medical Clinic.

Those interested in attending the virtual workshop, email Mandy Feavel at mandy.feavel@avianconservationcenter.org by Jan. 18, 2021. Feavel can also provide further information and workshop registration details, along with answering any questions you may have about the program.
