8-year-old shot in hunting accident suffers minor injuries

An eight-year-old suffered minor injuries after being shot in a hunting accident in a residential area in Burton, on Friday, Oct. 2, officials say.

The 8-year-old was struck in the arm by a single buckshot pellet while playing in the yard of a home on Ramsey Loop, according to a statement released by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. The injury was non-life-threatening, the statement said.

Officers responding to the scene at about 5:45 p.m. on Friday determined that a group of deer hunters had been conducting a dog-driven hunt in the area and had fired several shots at a running deer.

Empty shotgun shell casings were found by an SCDNR K-9 team, or an officer and his dog, approximately 275 yards away from the home where the child was playing, the statement said.

The incident remains under investigation by the department.
