BA earns big region win over JPII
Beaufort Academy volleyball picked up a big region win with a sweep of visiting John Paul II on Thursday.
The Eagles got off to a hot start and rode it all the way to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-19) victory.
Chase Vaigneur collected 14 kills, eight assists, two blocks, and two aces in a strong all-around effort, and Margaret Hiers had 16 assists, seven kills, and two aces. Mary Hanna Hiers added eight digs and two aces.
Lions pick up five-set win over Sundevils
Holy Trinity volleyball held on for a hard-earned five-set victory over visiting Charleston Collegiate on Tuesday.
The Lions dropped the first set but rebounded for a 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 15-7) victory.
Rachel Cain and Eliza Gaillard led the way at the net, while setters Sanders O’Neal and Megan Shearon had a strong performance and Hailey James provided a spark off the bench.
The Lions (2-3) host Bridges Prep on Monday.
CROSS COUNTRY
BHS boys 2nd at USCB Invitational
Bluffton’s girls took the team title and May River’s girls and Beaufort High’s boys each claimed runner-up finishes in USC Beaufort High School Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
The Bobcats had six runners finish in the top 20 of the 76-runner field for the girls race, finishing with 47 points to edge rival May River (61) for the title.
May River’s Anya Arroyo blazed to a 5K time of 18:46 to win the individual title by more than a minute over Fort Dorchester’s Theresa Studley (19:56), while teammate Victoria Sosa (20:50) was fourth and Beaufort High’s Anna Brown (20:58) was fifth.
The first Bobcat across the line was Ava Gerschutz (21:04) in seventh, but she was followed in close succession by teammates Kaitlyn McDonagh (21:06) in eighth, seventh-grader Aubrey Sampson (21:22) in 10th, Penelope Roman (21:25) in 11th, and Katie Sanofsky (22:41) in 16th.
Beaufort High’s Nash Mills ran 16:16 to win the boys race by seven seconds over Richmond Hill’s Corey Adamski, but the Wildcats placed five runners in the top 10 and all seven in the top 20 of the 120-runner field to win the team title with an impressive 30 points. Beaufort (52) was second, followed by May River (57).
May River’s Colin Keck (16:30) and Jaxon Beebe (16:45) were third and fourth, while Beaufort seventh-grader Gavin Moore (17:00) rounded out the top 10, and Eagles teammates Charlie Bennett (17:23) and Connor Eby (17:25) placed 12th and 13th.
JPII boys, HHCA girls lead the pack in SCISA meet
John Paul II’s boys and Hilton Head Christian Academy’s girls led the way in a SCISA cross country meet hosted by Lowcountry Montessori School on Tuesday.
Only two boys teams posted team scores, as JPII scored a perfect 15 points, while Beaufort Academy totaled 44 points. HHCA was the only girls team with the required five finishers to post a team score.
JPII’s Oliver Witkowski won the boys race with a time of 20 minutes flat, as the first five runners to cross the finish line were all Golden Warriors. Kelon Reynolds (20:23) was second, followed by Finn Mahoney (21:10), Sam Rembold (21:19), and Anderson Dewig (21:25).
Brandon Trapp (21:39) and Maleik Chambers (21:41) led the way for BA and finished sixth and seventh, while Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Jack Mau (22:26) was eighth, and CBCCA’s Gabriel Lemacks (22:37) was ninth.
HHCA’s Devon Yarde blew away the pack of 13 runners in the girls’ race, finishing in 20:58 — more than two full minutes ahead of CBCCA’s Ashleigh Keisling (23:07). HHCA’s Ava Hahn (23:46) was third, followed by JPII’s Brandy Mahoney (23:59) and BA’s Alyssa Lewis (24:47). A trio of HHCA runners rounded out the top eight — Anna Kate Taylor (25:48), Abby Salus (25:49), and Emma Thompson (25:53).
SAILING
JPII sailors lead the way in local regatta
John Paul II sailed to victory over two local rivals in a regional middle and high school sailing event hosted at the South Carolina Yacht Club on Saturday.
With steady winds from the north at 12-15 mph and occasional gusts up to 20 mph, the sailors raced eight times in challenging conditions, the Golden Warriors took first place, followed by Hilton Head Prep and a team of independent sailors.
JPII’s Thomas Mazzeo and Neil Bunce and Hilton Head Prep’s Escher Lucier were the top skippers for the day, each claiming multiple victories during the eight-race regatta.
TENNIS
JPII blanks visiting Barnwell
The John Paul II girls tennis team breezed to a 9-0 win over visiting Barnwell High on Tuesday at Berkeley Hall.
The Golden Warriors won all six singles matches in straight sets and easily won each of the eight-game pro-set doubles matches.
