Q&A with BA’s Amelia Huebel and Lillian Aldred

It’s hard to believe that in just a few weeks, Amelia Huebel will no longer be a Beaufort Academy basketball player.

Huebel has been a mainstay on the court at BA — both as a basketball star and a volleyball standout — long enough to rack up 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. After helping the Eagles win a SCISA 1A state title in volleyball this fall, Huebel hopes to put another trophy in the school’s display case next month.

We sat down with Huebel and her coach, Lillian Aldred, on the LowcoSports Lowdown podcast. Here is an excerpt of that interview:

LowcoSports: Amelia, what an exciting season it has been for you so far, two huge milestones that you’ve achieved with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in your career. Just take a moment and reflect on on what your career has been like here before together.

Amelia Huebel: So I always started off being the youngest one on the team and looking up to the older people. And so now when I accomplish these things, and now I’m the oldest and I’m the leader on the team, it’s really cool to look back at where I started and where I am now. I never had a goal to get 1,000 points or 1,000 rebounds, so when I thought that I could actually get it and I knew I was going to, it was really cool when I had to work for that goal this year with my teammates.

LS: Lillian, it’s pretty rare to have a kid who has the longevity to be able to achieve both those milestones. What can you say about Amelia’s perseverance and what she’s meant to this program?

Lillian Aldred: She’s meant a lot to this program, not only in terms of athletic ability, but also in terms of the leadership that she shows to the other players. She’s been a constant force, not just on the floor, but in the locker room, constantly positive with her teammates with her coaches. Also in the community, you know, in the in the game that she scored 1,000 points, when I was telling the visiting coach that that was going to happen, she said that she was so glad that it was going to happen against her team, because she was hoping that that would be an inspiration to her players and to remind them that these things are possible and to dream big. And so when you hear another coach say something like that, you realize how special this really is. In 22 years of coaching, this is the first player that I’ve ever had to reach 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points in the same season. And it’s special. There’s no other word to really define it.

LS: Amelia, what would it mean to you … I mean, to win a state championship would be one thing, but to win volleyball and basketball state championships in your senior year — you can’t really write a scenario that’s more of a dream come true than that, can you?

AH: I mean, that would be really cool, because basketball has always been my favorite. I love volleyball, but I think basketball … it’s something that my dad and I have always bonded over. And I played it for so long, so winning it my senior year with everything that’s happened and the history that I have as a school would be really special.
