A Bluffton woman walking her dog close to her Sun City home was bit by an alligator Monday night.
The 68-year-old woman was walking her dog in an area between her home and the neighbor’s in the retirement community when the incident occurred, said David Lucas, a public information coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
The woman’s husband heard her yelling and ran outside to find she had been bitten on her leg and wrist.
EMS responded to the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital in Savannah, Lucas said.
The alligator, which was roughly 8 to 9 feet long, was captured and removed by a state-contracted alligator control agent. It was in a nearby pond when it was captured, he said.
The attack follows a similar incident in August of 2018 when a Hilton Head Island woman, also walking her dog, was killed after an alligator dragged her into a lagoon at the Sea Pines Resort.
The dog was not injured in the incident.
DNR is continuing to investigate.
