American Legion Beaufort Post 9 has awarded scholarships to six area Class of 2019 high school graduates headed to accredited colleges and universities.
Katherine Reilly (Wofford College), Emily Oldham (College of Charleston), David Mathai (Babson College), Carolyn Moss (South Carolina), Margaret Aimar (St. Andrews) and Mary Cooper (South Carolina) each received a substantial scholarship from the American Legion.
The graduates have to apply for the scholarships. The high schools in Post 9’s area – Beaufort High School, Beaufort Academy and John Paul II – were contacted and asked for applicants. Beaufort High did not submit any applicants this year.
Reilly and Oldham attended John Paul II. The rest attended Beaufort Academy.
Post 9 awards college scholarships to students who demonstrate an understanding of what it means to be a good citizen of the United States. The awards are based on the number of scholarships awarded up to a maximum of $5000 for 2019, as determined by the Executive Committee.
The scholarships will be paid directly to the accredited schools to which the applicants are registered to attend.
All applications become the property of The American Legion, Beaufort Post 9 and the awarding decisions are made by the Executive Committee of Post 9.
Applications must include a copy of applicant’s latest transcript indicating the current GPA, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the applicant’s school. Letter(s) of recommendation from each community volunteer organization and/or job supervisor, if applicable, are also required.
The community letter(s) should include the applicant’s position, the number of hours worked each week, and the number of months applicant was active.
