Businesses are closing while Second Helpings grows. Neither of those facts, are good news for Beaufort. The two business closures announced in the newspaper recently mean more than 100 of our neighbors will see their good-paying jobs simply go away. The summer residents and vacationers are also departing for the season, and with them go the low-paying service jobs that make up much of our tourist, hospitality and service based economy.
That’s were Second Helpings of the Lowcountry comes into focus. Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue and distribution network, helping to eliminate hunger in Beaufort. We work with our food providers and our distribution agencies to help those in need obtain nourishing food. The employment and wage problems in the Lowcountry are not new. Every week Second Helpings get new requests for food assistance. While we can’t get rid of the root cause of hunger and poverty, we will do everything possible to help the hungry in our community because “We believe that no person in our community should have to worry about whether or not they will have enough food to eat today.”
How can you help? Support Second Helpings by going to the Inaugural Wipe out the “Hunger Games” event. It will be held on Sunday, November 1st between 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Dataw Island Pavilion.
All the games and activities are fun and challenging but require no skill or physical dexterity. You can be a single spectator or you can put together a team of four and compete together. There will be music, food, beer, & wine along with a Live and Silent auction. Tickets are $35 per person. Contact Donna Klein (838-9756) or Donna McKeown (838-7678) for information or tickets. All the proceeds from this event go directly to support our Beaufort operations. Together we can wipe out hunger in Beaufort!
