2002: Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Dyke Coursen and Dana Tate are shot and killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic violence disturbance call for help. 

January 12

1944: Future world champion boxer Joe Frazier is born to Dolly Alston-Frazier and Rubin Frazier in Beaufort. He was the couple’s 12th child.

January 14

1868: A convention draws up the S.C. Constitution of 1868. The convention, which lasted until March 18, was made up of 76 African Americans and 48 white men.

1944: A battalion of Women Reserves, including 21 officers and 55 enlisted women, are activated at Parris Island, serving as lifeguards, musicians, truck drivers, and garrison troops for Page Field.
