Operations Specialist 1st Class Sharee Scantling of Beaufort shares the “first hug” with her children on the pier at Naval Air Station North Island after the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), the flagship of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, returns to its home port of San Diego on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025, from a nine-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. An integral part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Indo-Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary to execute the U.S. Navy’s role across the full spectrum of military operations.
