Sand Sharks split at Clayton State

The USCB men’s basketball team started the new year off in style with a 102-82 win at Clayton State on Saturday, evening the Sand Sharks’ record in Peach Belt Conference play at 3-3 after a rocky start to the league slate.

The Sand Sharks blitzed the Lakers from the jump, hitting eight 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 57-36 halftime lead and never letting up. Qurahn Anderson poured in 17 points to lead six Sand Sharks in double digits, and Dominic Eason flirted with a double-double with eight points and eight boards.

A sluggish shooting night from behind the arc and at the line derailed the USCB women’s momentum Saturday. After an unlikely 4-1 start to Peach Belt play that included four road wins, the Sand Sharks were unable to retain their road warrior status in a 51-46 loss to the Lakers.

USCB went 1-for-15 from 3-point range and 11-for-23 from the foul line to squander another strong defensive effort.

Janiyah Heyward had 14 points, Taniyah Bowman added 13, and Lydia Gattozzi collected 11 points and seven rebounds, but the trio also combined for 22 turnovers.

The Sand Sharks were back in The Cove on Wednesday to face Flagler before hitting the road to Columbus State on Saturday and Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday.
