May River’s boys won six events — including two in which the Sharks posted the best times in South Carolina Class 4A this season — to lead the way at the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Region 7 track and field meet Saturday at Whale Branch Early College High School.

Jaxon Beebe’s winning time of 2:01.24 in the 800 meters and the Sharks’ mark of 8:26.82 in the 4•800 relay both set the standard for Class 4A to lead an impressive showing from May River, but they weren’t the only ones setting state standards.

Battery Creek’s Michael Martello won the discus with an incredible throw of 142 feet, 9 inches — the best mark in Class 3A this season — to beat runner-up Xavier Chaplin of Whale Branch, whose mark of 127-9 was the best in Class 1A so far in 2021. Martello also placed second in the shot put.

The Warriors also saw Richard Parker win the 110-meter hurdles with a Class 1A-best time of 15.95 seconds and place second in the 400 hurdles, while Chaplin set Class 1A standards while placing second in the discus and third in the shot put (47-1).

Beaufort High picked up three wins on the track, with Zyrin Odom winning the 400 (52.71), Nash Mills claiming the 1600 (4:31.49) and placing second in the 800, and Joseph Patterson winning the 3200 (10:29.44).

In addition to Martello’s strong performance, Battery Creek teammate Trevin Singleton had a spectacular with four podium finishes, placing second in the 110 hurdles, long jump, and triple jump, and third in the 200.
