Beaufort’s John Miller had been trying for about 20 years to catch this night blooming cereus cactus in bloom. It blooms only at night and just once a year. The flower bud started to turn white at dusk. By 12:38 a.m., it was fully open, and you could smell it from 15 feet away. By 5 a.m., it was shriveled up. The flower, in Miller’s backyard, was 7ó inches wide from tip to tip.
