GIRLS HOOPS ROUNDUP

BA, Whale Branch compete in holiday tourneys

While several area girls basketball teams used the holiday break to catch their breath, others used the opportunity to put in work in holiday tournaments.

Beaufort Academy’s girls finished 1-2 and lost in the silver bracket championship at the IP Builders Holiday Classic hosted by Colleton Prep last week, while Whale Branch dropped all three games in a tough bracket at the Bobcat Classic in Bluffton.

BA couldn’t slow down Hilton Head Prep star Courtney Campbell in a 42-26 loss in the opening round in Walterboro, sending the Eagles to the silver bracket. They downed Thomas Heyward 47-28 to reach the final but came up short 40-26 against Charleston Collegiate.

The Warriors lost to Cypress Bay (Fla.) 62-29 on Thursday to open the Bobcat Classic, then fell 46-22 to Forsyth Central (Ga.) and 51-17 to Summit Country Day (Ohio) in the consolation bracket.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Beaufort, Bridges Prep, and Whale Branch all jumped back into action Tuesday, with the Bucs and Warriors starting region play. Region 8-3A play begins in earnest Friday with the Eagles at Philip Simmons and Battery Creek hosting North Charleston.
