There is yet another march coming to northern Beaufort County.
This one — called March for Change, Black Lives Matter — is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 on St. Helena Island.
This one will be slightly different from the two marches Beaufort has seen, so far, focusing on helping black youths.
“Our march is really about mentorship, helping our children and their children have a better way around here,” organizer Raymond Wilson said Monday. “It’s much more of a mentoring than just a protest. We’re not angry, but we need change. And we can start with ourselves.”
The marchers will start at St. Helena Elementary at 9 a.m. and make their way to Penn Center, where a program will start about 10:15. State Representative Michael Rivers and youth mentor and activist Daryl Orage will speak.
Then mentors, about a dozen will take over.
“We’re going to break the young people up into groups and the leaders will take them around from table to table,” Wilson said.
At each table, the mentors will speak to one small group at a time on a broad range of topics. According to Wilson. topics will range from dealing with the police, to entrepreneurship, to careers in the military to hygiene.
There will be food, as well, with a break for lunch.
“If it all goes well, I’ll know I helped somebody,” Wilson said.
