The Unknown Story of Senator Niels Christensen, 1876-1939

Through Monday, April 22, www.beaufortcountyhistoricalsociety.com. The Beaufort County Historical Society and the Beaufort District Collection of the Beaufort County Library invite the public to view a filmed presentation about the life and work of Niels Christensen, Jr., who represented Beaufort County in the S.C. Senate from 1905 to 1924. His father immigrated from Denmark and served in the Civil War; his mother came with her family from Massachusetts. This talk can be viewed on-line at the website beaufortcountyhistoricalsociety.com, under the Events tab. The speaker is Anne Christensen Pollitzer, granddaughter of Sen. Christensen, and a fifth-generation Beaufortonian. Her remarks and slides offer a vivid picture of life in Beaufort and Columbia in the late 19th and early 20th century. She draws heavily from the detailed journal maintained by Frederick Christensen, Niels’ brother and business partner. This is the story of a man who created several small businesses that provided employment for many in Beaufort and of a Senator who worked both in the community and in the Legislature to advance progressive policies on behalf of the general public.
